HIV/AIDS & Other Health Issues
HIV is spread primarily by unprotected sex, contaminated blood transfusions, hypodermic needles, and from mother to child during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding. (Some bodily fluids, such as saliva, sweat and tears, do not transmit the virus.)
HIV is a member of the group of viruses known as retroviruses. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is defined as an HIV infection with either a CD4+ T cell count below 200 cells per µL or the occurrence of specific diseases associated with HIV infection. In the absence of specific treatment, around half of people infected with HIV develop AIDS within ten years.
